How to make a /friends page

A /friends page is a page on your website where you link to people you like. It takes about 10 minutes. Here's how.

  1. Pick your people
  2. Build the page (copy my template, or have AI do it)
  3. Publish it at /friends
  4. Submit it here

1 Pick your people

A good way to start: 5 real friends + 5 good follows. Friends are people you know. Follows are people whose work you love online.

For each one, you need three things: their name, a link, and one short line about why you like them. Link to their personal website if they have one. A social profile works too.

Don't overthink it! You can add more people later. Some pages list 3 people and some list 100.

2 Build the page

Option A: copy and paste this HTML

Swap in your own people. It's plain HTML, so it picks up your site's styles.

<h1>Friends</h1>

<p>People I like and admire. Some I know in real life. Some I only know through their work online.</p>

<h2>Friends</h2>
<ul>
  <li><a href="https://example.com">Jane Doe</a>: we met in college and she still makes me laugh.</li>
  <li><a href="https://example.org">Sam Lee</a>: writes the best weekly newsletter about gardening.</li>
  <li><a href="https://example.net">Alex Kim</a>: my old coworker, now building a cool little app.</li>
</ul>

<h2>People I follow</h2>
<ul>
  <li><a href="https://example.com">Pat Rivera</a>: I read every post the day it comes out.</li>
  <li><a href="https://example.org">Chris Wu</a>: taught me how to cook through YouTube.</li>
</ul>

<p>This is a /friends page, inspired by <a href="https://slashfriends.org">slashfriends.org</a> and <a href="https://nickgray.net">Nick Gray</a>.</p>

The last line is an optional credit. Keep it and your site gets a FEATURED badge in the directory.

Option B: have your AI agent build it

Have your AI agent make a /friends page

$ I want to add a /friends page to my personal website. It's a page at /friends where I link to people I like and admire, kind of like an old-school blogroll.

Paste into Claude, ChatGPT, or your favorite agent. It interviews you about your friends, then builds the page.

3 Publish it at /friends

The address is the whole trick. Everyone puts the page in the same place, yoursite.com/friends, so people (and robots) can find it.

  • WordPress: Pages, Add New. Title it "Friends", set the slug to friends, and paste the template into a Custom HTML block.
  • Squarespace, Wix, Webflow, Ghost: add a new page and set its URL slug to friends. Paste the template into a code or HTML block, or just type the list.
  • Static sites (Hugo, Jekyll, Eleventy, Astro): add friends.md or friends/index.html so it builds to /friends/.
  • Hand-written HTML: save the template as friends/index.html on your server.

Already have a blogroll or a links page somewhere else? Put a copy (or a redirect) at /friends. The directory only lists pages at that address.

4 Submit it

Go to the submit page and enter your domain. A robot checks that your /friends page exists and looks like a real personal page. Most sites get listed right away. If something looks like a company or spam, I review it myself first.

Questions

Does it have to be at /friends?

Yes. That's what makes it work. A page called /blogroll or /links is great, but this directory only lists /friends pages.

Can my company make one?

No, sorry. This is for personal websites: a person linking to other people they like.

What if I don't have a website?

Make one! Here's a directory of personal websites for inspiration.
